Artists Gathering at Birkenhead Priory

On Saturday 30th September 2023 the Material Matters Collective organised a Gathering at The Birkenhead Priory: bringing artists and friends together in an invitation to help shape our major new project at The Williamson Gallery in 2024.

24 artists from different disciplines joined us for a retreat day at Birkenhead Priory, invited to reflect with us on the creative possibilities of Gawain and The Green Knight. This famous 14th century text will become the focus of INTO THE WYLD our residency at The Williamson from 1 Aug – 24 Dec 2024.

The Priory is a scheduled ancient monument dating from 1150, a miraculous survivor in the centre of shipping, industrial units and housing in the centre of Birkenhead.

The Gawain poet was probably from north west England, and possibly would have known the Priory. Wirral is specifically mentioned in the poem. We chose this as a starting point for an intense day of reflection and creative exploration.

Thank you to all our artists who contributed in such considered, joyful and expert ways. We cannot wait to see what you propose as we shape our plans and put our formal call-out later this year.
